Efforts to establish a Catholic church in Green Tree began in 1930. It was on January 5, 1931 that Bishop Boyle approved St. Margaret's as a mission parish of St. Martin's in the West End. A frame building located at Mansfield and Greentree Roads was converted into a church. The first Mass at the new St. Margaret Mission Parish was held on May 3, 1931. There were 150 families registered at the church at that time. This new endeavor flourished and on July 27, 1938, St. Margaret officially became a separate parish.
On November 9, 1952, a new school and church were dedicated. Until the construction of a dedicated church building could be undertaken, from 1952 to 1980, St. Margaret's worshipped in a space within the present-day school building. When our present church was built, the former church was converted into a gymnasium, which is named after the first pastor, Fr. McDonough.
The cornerstone of present St. Margaret Church was installed on December 9, 1979 —49 years, to the day, when sixteen men petitioned Bishop Boyle to establish the parish.
